There was confusion around the popular Daleko Market in
Lagos State, on Thursday afternoon, as gunmen alleged to be
policemen, shot a yet-to-be identified foreign national to
death
Seven people have since been arrested in connection with the
incident, which caused panic among traders as well as bank
workers around the market
The gunmen, who were allegedly in police uniform, drove in a
commercial bus and reportedly shot the man , who was driving
a Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the gunmen had escaped
before a team of policemen from Area D Police station could
get to the scene.
It was gathered that the deceased, who was later identified as
Santos Korie, was driving around Daleko under bridge, when
the gunmen blocked his SUV and shot him several times.
Santos was said to have died on the spot, but the police in the
state claimed that he died on the way to the hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide,
in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune,
admitted that preliminary reports pointed accusing fingers at
the police.
She, however, insisted that “it was not immediately ascertained
whether the gunmen were hired killers in police uniform or
real police officers.”
The police statement also confirmed that “on enquiry, eye
witnesses clustering around told men of the Area “D” that the
gunmen were in police uniform and had operated in a
commercial bus.”
The statement from the Lagos police also confirmed that some
people had been arrested in connection with the incident.
